I was the newest associate at a prestigious law firm, happily married to a wonderful man, and well on my way to living the dream.  Yet, I felt this vague yearning for something more.  I’d always dreamed of writing a novel, so I decided to dust off my journalism degree and get to it.  I opened my computer, expecting a literary masterpiece to magically appear.

In hindsight, I can’t believe I was that naïve.  After many attempts, there was no magic; no story — only a blank screen staring back at me.  How could writing be my purpose if it was this hard?

Finally, one night before going to bed I had a radical thought:  why not pray for God to show me my story in a dream?  It sounded a little kooky, and I don’t know that I really expected anything to happen, but everything else had failed so I did it.  And, it worked.  That night I had one of the most vivid dreams ever, and woke up excited to know that I was supposed to write about my life.  I went back to the computer and began to write my story.  The words came easily and it was okay, except for one thing:  Even I was bored!  Nothing particularly exciting had ever happened to me and my writing showed it.

Then, bam!  A few weeks later my seemingly perfect world fell apart.  I lost a lifetime of dreams in an instant, and the only thing that held me through it all was a knowing that my experiences were somehow meant for a higher purpose.  I got my story, and life has given me much more “material” since then. . . . . Through it all, that dream from so many years ago has continued to remind me that what I’ve learned from my challenges with death, dis-ease, divorce, the search for purpose and love, and the quest for something “more” can be used to inspire others.

I’ve drawn from my world to write a book of inspirational thoughts (YOU ARE NOT ALONE), a recently released novel (WHEN I WAS BROKEN), and a forthcoming novel (BITTERSWEET).  Please take a moment to check out my books, and let my stories entertain and inspire you.

My experiences have also birthed a passion for working with others, especially women.  In 2012, I co-created YANA (You Are Not Alone) retreats for women seeking more passion, purpose, and peace; and in 2013 I co-founded a local meetup group for women in the Atlanta area.  For more information check out www.yanaretreats.com and www.meetup.com/yanasisters.
